Sen. Shehu Sani, a social critic and former politician, claimed on Sunday that Nigeria lost its African blood brothers as a result of its conditional friendship with the West.
The announcement came as news broke that the military governments in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso had left the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, and withdrew their membership.
Sani said that their decision to leave ECOWAS was a major blow to West Africa.
Metrowatchxtra.com reported that the leaders of the three Sahel nations disclosed this in a joint statement on Sunday.
Recall that all three were suspended from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali facing heavy sanctions.
According to the military juntas, it was a “sovereign decision” to leave the Economic Community of West African States “without delay”.
However, the former lawmaker stated that the development signified the failure of diplomacy and dialogue.
“The Withdrawal of Mali, Niger Republic and Burkina Faso from Ecowas is a serious setback for West Africa.
“It signifies the failure of diplomacy and dialogue. We lost our African blood brothers because of our Western conditional friends.
“We sacrificed our hands to keep our wristwatches,” Sani wrote on his X handle.
