The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun display of voters’ register in Oyo and Lagos states, following the just-suspended Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
Administrative Secretary of INEC in the Oyo state, Biodun Onikate-Amosu and Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, in separate statements, yesterday, said the exercise would give opportunities to those that have been registered ahead of the 2023 general elections to make claims and objections before the final voters’ register would be produced.
They stated that the one-week exercise, which began on Monday August 15, would end next week Monday.
The essence of the exercise is to grant the registered voters access to their information and to scrutinise the preliminary voters’ register towards making claims or raising objections against inclusion of registrants.
Onikate-Amosu implored voters, whose information were wrongly taken during the just-suspended CVR to visit the 33 local government offices of INEC in the state, where they registered for necessary corrections.
Agbaje, in a statement by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Adenike Oriowo, said the display was in line with section 19 of the Electoral Act 2022
He urged all registered voters in the state to check through for any omission, correction and objection to any information on the register during the period.
The preliminary voters’ registers that were displayed prior to some past general elections, contained names of some dead persons and multiple appearances of same name on the voters’ registers in different states in Nigeria.
