Senator Godswill Akpabio has defeated Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara governor, to emerge as Senate President of the 10th National Assembly.
Akpabio, a former Akwa-Ibom governor and ex-Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, polled 63, the highest votes cast to emerge the nation’s number three man. Yari got 46.
Earlier, Senator Ali Ndume nominated the APC-endorsed Akpabio for the senate president position, while Senator Elisha Abbo nominated Yari for same position.
The Upper Legislative Chamber had adopted the open-secret voting system, with the Clark of the National Assembly calling out senators-elect based on alphabetical order of their states.
