The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has said that the ongoing prosecution of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) sends a strong message that no politician or influential figure is above the law.

The organization further commended the swift and decisive manner in which the former Governor’s prosecution is being conducted.

Recently, the ICPC confirmed that El-Rufai has been charged with multiple offenses and was arraigned earlier this week.

In a statement released by its Director of Strategic Communication, Tunji Bamidele, the group characterized this development as a crucial advancement in the battle against corruption and the enhancement of accountability within public institutions.

Bamidele pointed out that the allegations against the former governor are serious, encompassing the conversion and possession of public property as well as money laundering, as detailed in suit number FHC/KD/73/2026.

The ICPC’s dedication to maintaining the rule of law and ensuring that all individuals, irrespective of their status, are held accountable for their actions is praiseworthy.

He also revealed that, in addition to the federal charges, the ICPC has initiated proceedings in the State High Court, under case number KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26. These charges include abuse of office, fraud, and intent to commit fraud, among others.

According to the organization, the concurrent filing of charges in both federal and state courts on March 18, 2026, highlights the ICPC’s commitment to a thorough and comprehensive strategy in tackling corruption at all levels of government.

The group underscores the significance of due process in this matter. The ICPC has assured the public of its commitment to adhering to all legal protocols throughout this process.

Bamidele stated, “It is essential that the principles of fairness and justice guide the proceedings, ensuring that the rights of all parties involved are respected.

“The integrity of our judicial system relies on the commitment to these principles, and the DWI stands resolutely in favor of a transparent and accountable legal process.

“As citizens, we must acknowledge the importance of this moment in our nation’s progress toward enhanced accountability and transparency in governance.

“The actions undertaken by the ICPC act as a strong reminder that corruption will not be tolerated, and that individuals in positions of authority are not exempt from the law.”

He called upon stakeholders, including civil society organizations, the media, and the general public, to stay alert and involved as the case unfolds.

He urged the judiciary to approach the forthcoming arraignment with the highest level of seriousness and diligence.

He remarked, “The public’s trust in our legal system depends on the belief that justice is not only served but is also perceived to be served.

“As we progress, let us remain united in our determination to eliminate corruption and cultivate a society where integrity and accountability are paramount.”
