Just as the Turkish government was concluding operations to remove people flattened under the rubble of the February 6 earthquake that shook the country, a 6.4 magnitude quake struck on Monday.

Although there is no record of casualties yet, authorities are scrambling to deploy rescue teams to the epicentre of the latest disaster in the southern province of Hatay.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake had hit Turkey’s southeastern Kahramanmaras province and Syria on Feruary 6 with 40 aftershocks, claiming more than 47,000 people, including Christian Atsu, a Ghanian international footballer.

The latest disaster damaged buildings in Hatay’s capital city, Antakya.

Muna Al Omar, a resident who spoke with The Sun, narrated her shock when the soil was rattled under her feet.

“I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” she said crying as she held her 7-year-old son in her arms. “Is there going to be another aftershock?”
