The Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), has elected new principal officers to run its affairs for the next two years (2021 – 2023) with Major-Gen. Abdullahi Muraina (rtd.), the erstwhile Deputy President, emerging as the 23rd President and Chairman of Council. Muraina takes over from Mrs. Patience Anabor, the immediate past President of the Institute.
Also elected were Dr. Christiana Vincent-Atako, a former acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Niger Delta Development Commission (NNDC) as Deputy President while Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd.), a former Director at both Defence Headquarters and Naval Headquarters, Abuja, became the National Treasurer.
The new President, a Fellow of the Institute since 2011 and its former National Treasurer, is an alumnus of both University of Lagos and University of Ilorin from where he obtained a B.Sc. in Accounting and Master of Business Administration respectively.
The new President had an early Koranic education and attended the Islamic Mission School, Odoye Ibadan for his primary education before proceeding to the Nigerian Military School, Zaria for his secondary education between 1972 and 1976. He was at the Polytechnic Ibadan for his Advanced Level course between 1976 and 1978.
Muraina had a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army and retired voluntarily after 35 years of meritorious service as a Major General.  He was until his retirement from the Nigerian Army in September 2014, the Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army).
The retired General whilst in the Nigerian Army held several command, staff and instructional appointments.
These include member of the Nigerian Army Training and Assistance Group in The Gambia and served as Head of the Gambian National Army Finance and Records; a role he performed creditably in the quest for repositioning that country’s Army’s Finance.
While in the service of the Nigerian Army, retired Maj Gen Muraina was decorated with Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS) and Grand Service Star (GSS).
He was also honoured with General Service Medal of Honour, Command Medal of Honour and Field Command Medal of Honour amongst others.
The new President and Chairman of Council of the Institute’s pedigree as a thoroughbred, seasoned and tested professional and military officer is not in doubt as he has distinguished himself creditably in every assignment he has been saddled with.
Apart from being a Fellow of NIM, he is also a Fellow, Certified National Accountant and Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria. In addition, he is Member, Institute of Directors Nigeria and the National Institute  being an alumnus  of  the  prestigious National  Institute  for  Policy  and  Strategic  Studies.
Muraina who joined the Institute in 2003 as Member has served the Institute in various capacities at different times. He was the Chairman of the Audit Committee of the Institute of Management between 2015 and 2017 and was elected to the Institute’s Council in 2014. He won the Institute’s Presidential Award for his consistent support of the Institute’s programmes in 2014.
A devout Muslim, he is married to Mrs. Peju Muraina, a member of the Institute, and blessed with children.
According to a statement signed by the Registrar/Chief Executive of the Institute, Mr Tony Fadaka, the investiture of the new President and Chairman of Council which will be witnessed by members of the Institute, representatives of other professional bodies, government and corporate bodies will take place on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos at 11a.m.
