Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said that Seun Kuti, Afrobeat singer, will report to the police on Monday, following the arrest warrant issued by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba.
This comes following the speculation that a team of policemen stormed Seun’s home at Allen Avenue, in Lagos, on Sunday, but met his absence.
Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), told The PUNCH on Sunday that the embattled singer sought his legal counsel following the assault on a police officer and he(Falana) was ready to defend him.
He also confirmed that the singer has enough evidence to defend himself and that this is not his first encounter with the police.
He said, “I am his lawyer and he has briefed me. He certainly has evidence. This is not the first time he is dealing with the police.
“He is going to report himself to the police tomorrow morning. There is no problem at all.”
METROWATCHXTRA.COM reports that a video emerged on Saturday showing Kuti pointing to the unidentified police officer before proceeding to push and slap the officer.
Following the criticism that followed, the police IG ordered for Kuti’s arrest, and okayed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault and the prosecution of the singer.
The musician had alleged attempted murder of himself and his family members by the police officer in question.
In the past, Falana represented the singer’s father, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, during his agitation against the Nigerian government, which resulted in his own arrest in 1993.
