At least two people have died during massive celebrations in Mexico City after Mexico’s national team secured a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

City authorities said a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from suffocation as huge crowds gathered to celebrate Mexico’s historic 2-0 victory over Ecuador. Officials added that investigations are ongoing, while local media have also reported an unconfirmed third fatality.

Mexico’s victory ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout-stage win and sparked jubilant scenes across the capital, with thousands of supporters flooding the streets in celebration.

The team will now face either England or DR Congo in the Round of 16.
