The pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on politicians to ensure that the 2027 general elections are conducted without violence, thuggery, or character assassination.

The group made its position known in a communiqué issued after a caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of its national leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti. The communiqué was signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.

Afenifere urged political actors to conduct their campaigns peacefully, stressing that electioneering should be devoid of violence and smear tactics.

On insecurity, the group again expressed concern over the situation across the country, particularly in the South-West, noting a rise in violent attacks in the region.

It called on governors of the six South-West states to take more decisive steps to address the challenge, including strengthening the Amotekun security outfit, enhancing surveillance, and fast-tracking the establishment of state police.

The group also advised collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta, which have significant Yoruba populations, to tackle cross-border criminal activities.

Afenifere acknowledged recent efforts by the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including engagements with security chiefs, and commended the military and other security agencies for their efforts.

It paid tribute to fallen soldiers and expressed condolences to their families, while calling for increased support for the armed forces through improved equipment, morale, and both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies.

The group further urged security agencies to investigate possible internal collaborators aiding criminal elements, noting that some publicised confessions by suspects point to local complicity.

It stressed the need for vigilance within communities, warning that some individuals are aiding kidnappers, bandits, and terrorists.

Afenifere also sympathised with victims of terrorism across the country, describing the situation as deeply troubling and urging authorities to intensify efforts to end the violence.

Reiterating its long-standing position on restructuring, the group said urgent action was needed, adding that such reforms would support efforts to build a more stable and prosperous nation.

It noted President Tinubu’s commitment to national development and expressed alignment with efforts aimed at repositioning the country.

The group also invited governors and notable individuals to the centenary celebration of Pa Fasoranti, scheduled for May 11, 2026.
