The senator representing Niger South Senatorial District, Sen. Peter Jiya, has defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Jiya’s letter of defection was read by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday.

The letter read: “I was formerly a member of the PDP, which was my sponsoring party.

“However today, I have resigned my membership of the PDP. This decision is due to the ongoing quarrels and significant divisions within the party.

“Furthermore, kindly take notice that effective today, I have decided to join and associate with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to continue my political career.”

The senator expressed his profound gratitude to his former party, PDP, for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation and humanity.

“I remain grateful and wish the party well in the future, especially if it is able to resolve its internal challenges,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that with Jiya’s defection, the latest configuration of senators in the senate across party line is: APC, 90; ADC, nine; PDP, four; APGA, one and NDC, one.

While New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has one senator and Accord one while SDP and Labour Party have none, making it 106 senators, with three seats vacant due to the demise of their former occupants. (NAN)
