The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that it has completed preparations for the 2027 election timetable and its associated activities.

This was disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

Amupitan confirmed that it has made submissions to the National Assembly regarding the ongoing Electoral Act amendment by the lawmakers, noting that the final outcome might affect some of the schedules by INEC for the 2027 election.

The INEC chairman, however, confirmed that the commission is ready for the 2027 polls in the country and has based its plans on the existing Electoral Act.

Recall that the passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, remained inconclusive on Tuesday as the Senate failed to reach a final decision after spending more than four hours considering the report of a seven-member ad hoc committee behind closed doors.

The prolonged deliberation ended without a clear resolution, further delaying amendments widely viewed as critical to Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future elections.

The upper chamber had commenced deliberations on the consolidated report of the ad hoc committee, which was set up to collate and harmonise lawmakers’ submissions and opinions on the bill.

After initial discussions in an open plenary, the Senate dissolved into a closed-door session to scrutinise the documents submitted by the committee.

However, when lawmakers reconvened, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declined to disclose the outcome of the deliberations, choosing instead to adjourn plenary to the next legislative day.
