A late afternoon fire outbreak on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, destroyed the Examination Hall of Igbanke Grammar School in Igbanke, Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to reports from the school community, the fire originated from a neighbouring community, Ekpon, before spreading into the school premises at about 5.30 pm.

The inferno quickly engulfed the Examination Hall, razing the structure completely and destroying materials within.

Swift intervention by teachers, students and residents of the surrounding community helped to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other buildings in the school compound.

Their collective efforts ensured that classrooms, administrative offices and other facilities were spared from further damage.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and frightening, noting that the dry conditions and strong winds at the time aided the rapid spread of the flames.

Fortunately, no casualties were recorded, as students had already vacated the premises when the fire broke out.

The management of Igbanke Grammar School has confirmed that the incident has been formally reported to the Edo State Ministry of Education.

Relevant authorities are expected to visit the school to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary support for the restoration of the destroyed facility.

The fire incident has raised fresh concerns about safety measures in public schools, particularly in rural communities where access to firefighting equipment and emergency response services remains limited.

Stakeholders are calling for urgent government intervention to rebuild the damaged Examination Hall and strengthen fire safety infrastructure in schools across the state.
