Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has paid glowing tributes to late founding editors of Newswatch Magazine, Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agbese, describing their deaths as a major loss to Nigerian journalism and the nation at large.

This is contained in a statement jointly issued by the guild’s President, Eze Anaba and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, in Abuja on Thursday.

The guild described the veteran journalists as iconic figures whose contributions to investigative journalism and press freedom left an indellible mark on the media industry.

It added that the two prominent media figures were respected voices in national discourse, noted for their incisive commentaries, professionalism and unwavering commitment to democratic values.

According to NGE, Mohammed and Agbese brought prestige to the journalism profession through fearless reporting and ethical practice, inspiring generations of journalists across the country.

The editors noted that their works had helped to give investigative journalism renewed impetus and contributed significantly to nation-building.

As a mark of respect, NGE urged journalists nationwide to set aside a day for reflection and rededication to the core principles of journalism, including truth, accuracy, fairness, objectivity, independence, integrity, transparency and accountability.

It said that the legacies of two media icons would continue to serve as guiding lights for media practitioners and as enduring reminders of the responsibility of the press in a democratic society. (NAN)
