United States President Donald Trump said the US would “run” Venezuela “until such time that we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” following the U.S. military operation that captured the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife.

Trump offered few details about how the United States would oversee Venezuela, saying only that “a group” would do so. It was not clear whether that would involve an occupying military force, but Trump said he was not afraid of “boots on the ground.”

The US president spoke at length about American oil companies remaking the country’s energy infrastructure. Venezuela holds roughly 17 percent of the world’s oil reserves.

Trump said Maduro, who had led the country since 2013, and his wife were being taken to New York to face drug and weapons charges.
