Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Sheriff F.O. Oborevwori, has described the late Tony Onyeagwu as a man of rare vision and exceptional dedication.

The governor made the remark on Saturday during the finals of the second edition of the Tony Onyeagwu Annual Memorial Football Tournament for public primary schools in Ika South Local Government Area, held at the University of Delta, Agbor Mini Stadium, Main Campus.

Represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, Governor Oborevwori said he was delighted to witness the second edition of the competition, noting that the event transcended sports and stood as “a celebration of legacy, youth, and community spirit.”

“I was also here at the maiden edition last year. The late Tony Onyeagwu was a man of remarkable vision and uncommon dedication. His passion for education, community development, and sports as a unifying force continues to speak through the lives he touched,” he said.

The governor added that the tournament stands as a living tribute to Onyeagwu’s ideals, proving that one person’s commitment can leave a lasting impact.

“As we watched these young stars, we saw not only footballers but the promise of Delta’s future, strong, talented, disciplined, and full of potential. Sports go beyond the excitement of competition; they build character, instill teamwork, nurture resilience, and teach respect,” he stated.

Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grassroots sports development, stressing that every great athlete often starts with a simple opportunity sometimes from a school playground.

“That is why we continue to invest in school infrastructure, physical education training, and modern sporting facilities across the state,” he added.

He congratulated the winners and expressed appreciation to the organisers, sponsors, teachers, and volunteers whose dedication ensured the success of the event.

“You have demonstrated that when a community comes together with a shared purpose, great things happen. Let us continue to invest in our children, our communities, and the bright future of Delta State,” he said, praying for God’s continued blessings on the memory of the late Tony Onyeagwu.

Before his passing four years ago, Late Tony Onyeagwu was an accomplished gentleman, philanthropist, and revered community leader from the notable Onyeagwu family of Agbor, Delta State.
