President Bola Tinubu has commended the Super Eagles for what he described as a valiant effort in their bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s disappointing exit in Sunday’s playoff encounter against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged the national team to put the setback behind them and immediately redirect their focus to the forthcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.

Nigeria’s World Cup hopes were extinguished after a tense evening in Morocco, where the Eagles were held to a 1–1 draw after extra time before losing 4–3 in a dramatic penalty shootout. The result saw DR Congo advance to the Inter-Confederation Play-off, keeping their own World Cup journey alive while ending Nigeria’s quest for a return to the global stage for the second successive tournament.

While acknowledging the pain felt across the nation, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of recognising the team’s efforts, especially after securing victory in their first playoff match.

“Notwithstanding the unfortunate loss, we must commend the players for their efforts and continue to support them,” the President said.

He added that Sunday’s defeat should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders in Nigerian football.

“We must now plug all the loopholes. Our football administrators, players, and indeed all stakeholders must go back to the drawing board,” President Tinubu noted.

Looking ahead to AFCON 2025, the President expressed confidence that the Super Eagles can reclaim their place among Africa’s football powerhouses.
