BREAKING: EDSIEC Fixes September 20 for Edo LG Council By-elections

This follows a resolution by the State Assembly mandating EDSIEC to conduct by-election to fill the vacant councilor positions within 3 weeks.

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has fixed Saturday 20th of September, 2025, for the conduct of the Local Government by-election across nine Local Government Councils covering 49 Wards and 1,485 Polling Units.

This follows a resolution last week by the Edo State House of Assembly mandating the state electoral commission to conduct by-election to fill the vacant councilor positions in the affected wards across the state within three weeks.

A statement signed by the Chairman of EDSIEC, Sir Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, said the conduct of the By-Election is in line with Section 28(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Edo State Local Government Electoral Law, 2012.

In line with the schedule, all registered Political Parties are required to collect Nomination Forms tagged A and A1, on behalf of their candidates at the EDSIEC Headquarters, located at Plot 116, Oko-Ogba Airport Road, Benin City on Friday, 5th of September and submit same on Tuesday, 9th.

From Monday, 1st September, 2025, Political Parties are to conduct their Primaries including resolution of disputes arising from the exercise and observation of same by EDSIEC.

The publication of personal particulars of candidates of Political Parties takes Place on Thursday, 11th of September, 2025 in accordance with section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022 which provides for such exercise within seven days of the receipt of the forms.

Meanwhile, campaign by Political Parties in public starts Friday, 12th September, 2025 and ends on Thursday, 18th, while submission of names of Polling Agents for the Election to the Electoral Officer of the Local Government Area by the Political Parties ends on Monday, 15th of September, 2025.
