The Abia government has refuted claims it spent N7 billion on the building of Smart schools in the state.

The government described the report as false and misleading.

The government’s position is coming in response to the allegations that N7 billion had already been spent on Smart schools.

The opposition, comprising the members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressive Congress, APC had accused the Abia State government of not being able to account for N54 billion allegedly spent on rehabilitation of public schools in the state.

However, Kenechukwu Nwosu, the Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Basic and Secondary Education in his response, said the state government on July 12, 2025 signed a contract with a company to build twenty Green Smart schools across the state.

“The total cost of this project is not up to ₦7 billion, directly disqualifying the false claims being circulated in the media.

”While preparations are at an advanced stage for the rollout of the schools across the state, the School Road Primary School in Umuahia has been selected as the pilot Smart School.

He said that Phase One of the project has been completed while the commencement of phase two has been delayed due to the drainage works on the school road gutters.

According to him, the smart schools would be powered by renewal energy and equipped with Smart Boards, personal digital tablets, CCTV surveillance, adding that pupils will learn artificial intelligence, robotics and coding.
