The Abia State Government has announced the approval of six months of paid maternity leave for nursing mothers.

It also granted three weeks for fathers.

The announcement was made by the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, during the World Breastfeeding Week celebration held at the Abia State Children’s Specialist Hospital in Umuahia on Tuesday.

Mrs. Otti explained that the decision is part of the state’s push to promote exclusive breastfeeding, improve child health, and strengthen family bonding.

She added that the policy also aims to foster harmony in homes by giving both parents time to care for their newborns.

Encouraging men to make the most of the paternity leave, Mrs. Otti advised fathers to assist their wives with domestic tasks so nursing mothers can focus on caring for their babies.

She also reiterated the state government’s commitment to mother-friendly policies in workplaces, including the provision of creches in both public and private institutions.

While unveiling a newly built creche at the Abia State High Court, the governor’s wife noted that she personally furnished and equipped the facility to ensure it is safe and child-friendly.

Another creche at the state secretariat in Ogurube Layout is also nearing completion, she added.

Highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding, Mrs. Otti described it as a natural and powerful way to nourish infants.

“Breastfeeding is nature’s way of giving optimal nutrition and care to children. It plays a vital role in both the health of the baby and the mother,” she said.

The theme for this year’s World Breastfeeding Week, according to her, is “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems”, with a special focus on environmental sustainability and climate change.

Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, described breastfeeding as a collective responsibility.

He stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, noting that breast milk provides all the essential nutrients a baby needs.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of the Abia State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Kalu Ulu Kalu, expressed concern that many mothers still do not fully embrace exclusive breastfeeding despite its proven benefits.

“It’s disheartening that despite the numerous benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding, many mothers still do not embrace this initiative and best child survival strategy”.

He emphasized the state’s ongoing efforts to boost breastfeeding awareness through training and community outreach.
