June 14, 2025 has been official declared as “Igbo Day” by Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina.

He declared June 14 as Igbo Day in recognition of the contributions and cultural heritage of the Igbo community in the state.

The proclamation, which was signed by Governor Stein, acknowledged the Igbo people as an integral part of North Carolina’s social, economic and cultural landscape.

The governor noted that Igbos have made significant impacts across various sectors, including education, law, medicine, information technology, entrepreneurship and the arts.

According to the statement, members of the Igbo community have been actively involved in charitable causes and civic engagement, volunteering in local schools, organising food pantry drives, adopting highways for cleanup efforts, and supporting women’s shelters and hospitals.

They were also noted to have participated in local festivals, showcasing Igbo cultural performances.

The proclamation also highlighted the creation of the nonprofit Igbo Day Festival Organisation in 2022.

The group organised the first Igbo Day Festival on July 10, 2022, with the goal of educating the broader public about Igbo traditions through art, music, language and values, while fostering cultural pride among younger generations.

Stein commended the Igbo community’s efforts to preserve and promote their heritage, foster unity and inspire future generations to embrace their identity.

“Now, therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ in North Carolina and commend its observance to all citizens,” part of the proclamation said.
