Maryam Abacha, widow of late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha has made an allegation.

She claimed the money her husband secured for Nigeria “vanished” after his death.

Abacha, who was rated as one of Nigeria’s notorious dictators died on June 8, 1998.

After his death, there were allegations of his stashing funds stolen from the Nigerian government abroad.

In 2014, the Switzerland government announced that it would return $320m (£240m) of the money allegedly stolen by Abacha.

The money was frozen by a Swiss court after a legal procedure against Abacha’s son, Abba.

Originally deposited in Luxembourg, it is a fraction of the billions of dollars allegedly looted during Abacha’s rule from 1993 to 1998.

Recovering the “Abacha loot” has been a major priority for Nigeria.

However, Maryam turned down reports of Abacha looting and stashing billions of dollars in foreign bank accounts during his time in office.

Mrs Abacha demanded concrete proof that her husband stashed public funds in foreign accounts.

She said: “Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?

“And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that.

“Why are you blaming somebody? Is that tribalism or a religious problem or what is the problem with Nigerians?

“I pray for Nigerians. I pray for all of us. I pray that we should have goodness in our hearts. We should stop telling lies and blaming people.

“Why are we so bad towards each other? Because somebody is a northerner or a southerner, somebody is a Muslim or a Christian, or somebody is nice or… It’s not fair.”
