Tesla CEO and tech mogul, Elon Musk, has described the United States’ $36 trillion national debt as “terrifying.”
The billionaire made this known in a now-viral post on X on Monday.
Reacting to a statistical graphic shared by The Rabbit Hole account detailing the massive debtfigure, Musk retweeted the post with the caption, “Terrifying, tbh.”
The graphic revealed that the national debt translates to $106,787 for every American, underscoring the country’s financial challenges.
The billionaire, who is a close ally of President-elect Donald Trump, is expected to play a role in addressing the debt crisis when he assumes his position as co-commissioner of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Metrowatchxtra reports that Trump recently appointed Musk, alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, to lead the DOGE initiative, which aims to overhaul the federal bureaucracy and reduce wasteful spending as part of Trump’s strategy to tackle the national debt.
The text on the graphic read: “WHAT IS THE NATIONAL DEBT TODAY? $36,035,929,076,961. THAT’S $106,787 FOR EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN AMERICA.”
Musk’s post quickly went viral, sparking widespread discussions on social media about the economic consequences of such staggering debt and the policies required to address it.
