US Shuts Down Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine

The United States has temporarily shut down its embassy in Kyiv, citing “specific information of potential significant air strikes.”

The decision, announced on Wednesday, comes with a strong advisory for U.S. citizens in Ukraine to be ready to take shelter if an air alert is issued.

This development follows Ukraine’s recent use of US-approved long-range missiles in attacks on Russian territory. The US Department of State Consular Affairs, in a statement published on the embassy’s website, explained the precautionary measure, instructing embassy staff to remain in secure locations. “Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place,” the statement read.

Heightened concerns over infrastructure vulnerability were underscored after Russia unleashed a massive barrage of 120 missiles and 90 drones on Ukraine’s energy grid on Sunday. The strikes caused widespread damage to power systems, claimed seven lives, and reignited fears over the stability of the country’s critical infrastructure during the winter months.

The US embassy in Kyiv urged Americans in the region to stockpile essential supplies, including water, food, and necessary medications. It warned that persistent Russian missile strikes could lead to “temporary loss of electricity and water,” along with broader disruptions to heating and municipal services.

“Persistent Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine may result in power outages, loss of heating, and disruption of municipal services,” the embassy emphasised.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Security Council’s Centre for Countering Disinformation, expressed concern about Russia’s preparations for further escalations. He revealed that Moscow has been accumulating missiles for months to conduct large-scale assaults on Ukraine.

“Let me remind you that the Russians have been stockpiling missiles for a series of attacks on Ukraine for months. This includes Kh-101 missiles, which they continue to produce, as well as Kalibrs and ballistics,” Kovalenko said, highlighting the extent of Russia’s military buildup.

As tensions rise, the US continues to take measures to safeguard its personnel and citizens in Ukraine while the region braces for the potential impact of further Russian strikes.
