…give FG three-week ultimatum

By Seyi Babalola

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) have threatened to go on strike indefinitely over outstanding salaries.

On Wednesday, SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi issued a joint statement.

The unions handed the federal government a three-week deadline to pay their unpaid salaries.

According to them, the Federal Government’s 10-day grace period to pay four months’ arrears salary to university workers expires on July 26, 2024.

The unions issued another three-week ultimatum to the Federal Government beginning Tuesday, September 17, to act on their demands or face an indefinite strike.

They threatened to close institutions and inter-university institutes if payments were not made within the new grace period.

SSANU and NASU are demanding, among other things, the payment of their members’ withholding salary for four months, improved remuneration, earned allowances, and the execution of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.

The unions accused the federal government of failing to act under the initial six-week deadline it imposed in July of this year.
