President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, pledged his support for the National Population Commission to conduct a credible population and housing census, stressing that accurate data are essential for the delivery of his Renewed Hope Agenda.

This was as the President appointed 20 federal commissioners for the NPC with nine current federal commissioners being appointed for a second term in office.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed the appointment in a statement on Wednesday.

The PUNCH reports that the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari approved N800bn for the conduct of the population and housing census, which was slated to be held between May 3 and 7, 2023.

It was, however, postponed indefinitely by the past administration, despite that the NPC had already spent N200bn out of the earmarked N800bn.

Speaking on Wednesday, Tinubu pledged his administration’s support for the NPC to conduct the census, asserting its importance in crucial aspects of national planning. He was, however, silent on the new dates for the exercise.

The President spoke during the launch of the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System, alongside the National Geospatial Data Repository and the National Coordination Committee on CRVS.
