The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide strike following what it described as hardships inflicted on Nigerians as a result of the removal of subsidy on petrol by the federal government.
On Wednesday, NLC directed its members across the country to commence a nationwide strike from August 2, 2023 if the President Bola Tinubu led federal government fail to revert to the old fuel pump price within seven days.
Part of the decision is a result of the NLC’s displeasure with the government following the announcement of the sum of N8,000 as palliative by the government to curtail the effect of the subsidy on Nigerians.
Recall that the NLC had described the payment of N8,000 to poorest 12 million Nigerian households as an insult and mockery to the congress.
Following the development, President Tinubu ordered the immediate review of the palliatives.
At the NLC’s Central Working Committee, CWC, meeting held Tuesday, July 25, at the Abuja Labour House, the decision to embark on nationwide strike action was approved.
Consequently, the congress directed all its affiliates unions and state councils to immediately begin mobilization of workers for a long-lasting strike and mass protests.
