The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Urhoghide announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the Acting National Chairman of the PDP in Abuja, dated May 31, 2023, and sighted by METROWATCHXTRA.COM.
He said the resignation was with immediate effect.
Urhoghide blamed his decision on what he termed negative political energy emanating from the irreconcilable differences and squabbles within the PDP at the national level and especially in Edo State.
“These squabbles have spiked to levels that have made it impossible for someone like me who is a confirmed democrat to function and grow as I envisioned in my political journey,” he said.
“This letter is also to the purpose of fulfilling the promise I made to the leaders of the PDP that I will consult and inform formally when and if I decide to take the steps set out herein.”
The Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee, however, expressed gratitude to the PDP which yielded him the platform to achieve the mission of serving his country as a two-term senator.
He said the experience — as a two-term senator — afforded him the opportunity to express himself in ways that have been able to in affecting his district.
“The opportunity helped too to build and form important and lasting friendships within the national and state party hierarchy and at the senate,” Urhoghide daid.
“These friendships I shall draw on, going forward. Above all else, it imbued in me knowledge and experience that I could not have gotten anywhere else,” the Edo Senator added.
He asked the PDP leadership to put him in prayers as he takes this bold step in the belief that it is the purpose of the Almighty God in His divine interference in the affairs of men.
Urhoghide lost his bid to represent Edo South Senatorial District under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a third term, due to the infighting in the PDP at his home state, Edo, which polarised the party.
