The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asked the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba to investigate and prosecute the commission’s embattled Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.

This is following the controversy that surrounded Saturday’s supplementary governorship poll in Adamawa after the REC controversially declared candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Aisha ’Binani’ Dahiru, as governor-elect, while results collation process was still on.

METROWATCHXTRA.COM reports that INEC took the decision to prosecute the embattled REC at its emergency closed-door meeting with all National Commissioners of the commission held at the INEC’s national headquarters in Abuja.

INEC had voided the declaration by the embattled REC with immediate suspension of collation of results. Noting that the action was an “usurpation of the powers” of the Returning Officer, the commission directed Ari to stay away from all activities relating to the election and from its Adamawa office.

At the meeting held today, INEC also directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the “unwholesome behaviour” of the embattled REC for further action.

Meanwhile, the electoral umpire has disclosed that collation of results for the Adamawa supplementary governorship election shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer.
