Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has reacted to his electoral loss in Lagos State in the Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections.
metrowatchxtra.com reports that Tinubu lost the state to his rival, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP). Obi polled 582,664 valid votes to defeat the “Lagos landlord”, Tinubu, who scored 541,850 votes.
Following Tinubu’s defeat, violence reportedly broke out in parts of Lagos Monday afternoon, with reported attacks on some traders of Igbo origin, who are believed to have voted their kinsman (Obi).
Reacting to the development in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, spokesman for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Tinubu appealed to Lagosians to remain calm and eschew any act that can lead to breakdown of law and order.
He condemned any form of violence against people of any ethnic group in Lagos.
Tinubu said Obi winning him in his(Tinubu’s) home state should not be a source of provocation to Lagosians.
He noted that the beauty of democracy is that people have a right to vote for the candidate of their choice.
According to the ex-Lagos governor, as a democrat, he is bound to accept the outcome of any election whether favourable or not.
“The fact that the APC narrowly lost Lagos State to another party should not be the reason for violence. As a democrat, you win some, you lose some. We must allow the process to continue unhindered across the country while we maintain peace and decorum,” Tinubu said.
