After 23 years in the National Assembly, Senate President Ahmed Lawan has won the senate race in Yobe North.
The job was hotly contested by the state’s two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Returning Officer of the zone, Professor Omolola Aduoju of the Federal University, announced the result at Umar Suleiman College of Education Gashua, saying Lawan received 91,318 votes to defeat his rival Ilu Alhaji-Bello of the PDP, who received 22,849 votes out of the 122,136 total valid votes cast.
Lawan represents Yobe North in the National Assembly after serving in both the Green and Red chambers for 23 years.
The senate president was elected to the House of Representatives for the Bade/Jakusko district in 1999 and to the Senate in 2007.
