Foremost human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, has appealed to the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL) to cancel its forthcoming conference in Sokoto State to protest the brutal murder and burning alive of a Christian girl, Deborah Samuel, over alleged blasphemy.
A video that trended yesterday, Thursday, May 12, 2022, showed some Islamic students of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto gleefully celebrating the murder of Miss Deborah Samuel for allegedly posting a comment on the students WhatsApp group which they considered blasphemous of Prophet Mohammed.
Adegboruwa in a short statement issued late yesterday argued that NBA-SPIDEL going ahead with the Sokoto conference would amount to dancing on Deborah’s grave.
His words: “I humbly urge NBA-SPIDEL not to hold any meeting or conference in the State where a Nigerian citizen has been brutally murdered and burnt to death.
“It is barbaric and lawyers should not be seen to be dancing on her grave in that State.
“We should make a statement to the government by canceling the Conference and hold it in a neighbouring State in the North.”
