OBITUARY | Former Head of State Ernest Shonekan Dies at 85

Former Chairman of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan is dead. He died at Evercare Hospital, in the Lekki area of Lagos state, at the age of 85.

Shonekan who emerged as the head of a concessional Interim National Government of Nigeria after General Ibrahim Babangida anulled the June 12 1993 election was from the same political home base as Chief Moshood Abiola who won the election.

 

General Sani Abacha was his second in command who took over after he was forced to resign.

 

Shonekan was said to have died in Lagos at the age of 85 after a protracted illness.

The UAC business man turned politician was the commander in chief of the Nigerian armed forced between August 26 and November 17 1993 when he was sacked by the late General Sani Abacha.
