A social group in Abakaliki, the United Brothers International Club, has pledged to support Governor David Umahi if he declares interest in the 2023 presidential race.
Mr Richard Idike, Chairman of the club’s 2021 end-of-year award ceremony made the disclosure in an interview.
Idike, who is the governor’s Special Assistant on Project Monitoring, said that the group was optimistic that the governor would heed the clarion call of people across the country and declare his interest.
“Members of the group are apolitical but we identify and support leaders who have touched the people’s lives and made positive impact on the society.
“We are desirous that the governor replicates his magic at the Federal level to make Nigeria a positive talking point of all nations.
“We would therefore support the governor’s presidential bid if he declares as part of our contributions towards the country’s rebirth,” Idike said.
He said that the award ceremony would take place on December 4, 2021 and would witness the recognition of individuals who have contributed positively to the development of the state and country.
“We would be honouring 12 personalities including the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Chief Francis Nwifuru.
“Nwifuru has led the most peaceful house of assembly in the country and as a former member of the House, I know its contributions to the development of the state.
“We would also honour Chief Chris Asaga, the Chief Executive of Cyrene Hotels Limited, some local government chairmen, among other personalities.
Mr Charlse Akpuenika, President of the club, said that it will “demonstrate appreciation towards Umahi’s good works if he decides to vie for the nation’s presidency.”
Akpuenika, who is the state Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, said that the club would actually contribute in the purchase of the governor’s nomination form.
“We would also be involved in other activities which would ensure the success of the bid as we want Nigeria to benefit from the governor’s managerial ingenuity,” Akpuenika said.
He said that membership of the club cuts across various segments of the society with its guiding vision being the upliftment of the society.
