Okpebholo Establishes Edo Lottery Regulatory Commission, Makes Former Speaker Okiye Chairman

In a move to strengthen regulatory oversight in the gaming sector, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has approved the establishment of the Edo State Lottery Regulatory Commission, positioning the State to harness the economic potential of the industry while safeguarding public interest.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued September 30, by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor.

According to the statement, the newly established Commission will serve as “the central regulatory body for all lottery, gaming, and related activities within the State.”

The Commission’s objectives include: Providing a legal and institutional framework for regulating lottery and gaming operations in Edo State, Ensuring transparency, accountability, and integrity in the conduct of lottery activities, Safeguarding the interests of participants and the general public through fair play and responsible gaming standards, and Generating revenue for the State through structured licensing and regulation of gaming operators.

To pioneer the affairs of the Commission, Governor Okpebholo approved the appointment of a five-member board, led by Rt. Hon. Frank Okiye, a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, who will serve as Chairman.

Other members of the board include Dandy Imoukhuede Oserei, Elvis Uadiale, Ndidi Aghimien, and Hon. Habibat Yakubu, who will serve as Secretary.

The statement added that the names of the nominees will be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and confirmation.

Describing the move as a forward-thinking step, the Government noted that the establishment of the Commission underscores its commitment to “creating a well-regulated gaming industry that protects consumers, enhances investor confidence, and contributes to the socio-economic development of Edo State.”
