Flood Alert: Nigerian Govt Issues Fresh Warning

Says 11 States at Risk

The Federal Government has issued a warning that 11 states may experience heavy rainfall and potential flooding between Sunday and Thursday.

The warning came from the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment.

According to the notice, the areas at risk include Adamawa State: Ganye, Natubi, Benue State: Abinsi, Agyo, Gogo, Ito, Makurdi, Udoma, Ukpiam and Nasarawa State: Agima, Rukubi, Odogbo.

Others are Taraba State: Beli, Serti, Donga, Delta State: Umugboma, Umukwata, Abraka, Aboh, Okpo-Krika, Niger State: Rijau, Kebbi State: Ribah,Kano State: Gwarzo, Karaye and Katsina State: Jibia.

The remaining states warned are Sokoto State: Makira and Zamfara State: Kaura Namoda, Shinkafi, Maradun, Gusau, Anka, Bungudu.

The ministry said that rising water levels in River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger are making the situation more dangerous, especially for communities living on floodplains.

It warned: “Also, due to a rise in the water level of River Gongola, River Benue, and River Niger, the communities on the flood plains of River Gongola up to Numan, and also communities on the flood plains of River Benue and River Niger up to Lokoja are advised to evacuate immediately. Relevant stakeholders should kindly take note.”

The ministry also appealed to state governments and emergency agencies to act quickly and give timely feedback to help reduce the impact.
