The spokesperson for the Senate, Yemi Adaramodu has revealed why state creation is not possible at the moment.

He spoke to journalists in Ilawe Ekiti over the weekend.

He revealed that the upper chamber has received about 61 proposals for state creation from the six geopolitical zones, it has no constitutional power to unilaterally approve such requests.

He explained that state creation can only be considered during a constitutional review process, which involves input from Nigerians and other critical stakeholders on issues ranging from local government autonomy to the creation of new states and local councils.

Adaramodu said all proposals submitted during interactions with constituents will be collated and reviewed by the constitutional review committee led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau.

The committee, he noted, will assess and filter the requests before presenting a report to the Senate.

“State creation is a serious matter that requires auditing demographic, geographic, and historical data,” Adaramodu said, adding that even within some requesting states, there is no unanimous support for the proposals.

He stressed that no state has yet been recommended for creation and that final decisions will only be made after the public hearing when the National Assembly resumes.
