A date has been set for the implementation of the recently approved 50% increase in call, data, and other tariffs for subscribers.

The Chairman of the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Gbenga Adebayo, stated this in an Interview with Daily Post on Wednesday.

According to Adebayo, telecom operators are in the process of meeting the necessary regulatory requirements to enforce the tariff hike.

While Adebayo did not specify an exact date for implementation, he noted that the increase would begin once operators such as MTN, Airtel, and Glo complete the required regulatory steps. He said, “The 50% tariff hike will be implemented as soon as possible. We are currently fulfilling regulatory requirements for the telecoms tariff hike.

“When the regulatory process is finalized, operators will start introducing the new tariff. I can’t confirm if this will happen by February 2025 or earlier, but it will begin as soon as the steps are completed,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the tariff hike recently approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In a statement on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero described the increase as a harsh measure that further burdens Nigerians.

The NLC accused the government of prioritizing corporate profits over the welfare of citizens, highlighting its failure to protect the interests of the people and making life increasingly difficult for the average Nigerian.
