Kenyan President William Ruto has revealed why he dropped the controversial Finance Act measure, which included tax increases, after 22 people were killed in a fatal youth protest.

Ruto revealed this on Wednesday.

He said, “I concede and therefore I will not sign the 2024 finance bill and it shall subsequently be withdrawn”.

The president added, “The people have spoken.”

Meanwhile, Ruto cautioned that withdrawing the law would result in a major reduction in funds for development initiatives.

Remember that last week, youths disgruntled by economic hardship flocked to the streets to protest tax increases planned by Kenya’s Finance Act, which was introduced by Parliament.

As a result, the generally peaceful marches became violent on Tuesday, when MPs passed the measure and police shot live bullets into protesters who plundered the partially burned parliament buildings.
