The Republic of Niger’s constitutional order is to be restored by the standby force of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The directive came after ECOWAS decided on the Niger coup during its Thursday extraordinary meeting in Abuja.

Omar Alieu Touray, the president of ECOWAS, announced while reading out the regional body’s resolution on Thursday in Abuja.

According to ECOWAS, all attempts to communicate with the military junta have been resolutely rebuffed by the leaders of the coup. They also denounce the ongoing arrest of former President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.

The regional group also requested support for the resolution it had adopted from the African Union (AU), affiliated nations, and institutions.

The resolution partly reads: “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defence Staff to activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements immediately.

“Order the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force to restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.

“Underscore its continued commitment to the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful means.”
