Lionel Messi, captain of Inter Miami, has responded to his team’s remarkable comeback triumph over FC Dallas in the League Cup round of 16 match on Monday.
Messi’s squad won a penalty shootout to advance to the competition’s quarter-finals.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker opened the scoring at the Toyota Center, scoring from the edge of the penalty area off a Jordi Alba assist.
Inter Miami, on the other hand, trailed by three goals to one in the 63rd minute when Facundo Quignon, Bernard Kamungo, and Alan Velasco scored for FC Dallas.
Benjamin Cremaschi pulled one back for Inter Miami a few minutes later, but an own goal by Robert Taylor made the score 4-2.
There was still time for more drama, as the game concluded in astonishing fashion, with Marco Farfan scoring an own goal and Messi scoring a spectacular free-kick to tie the score at 4-4.
Inter Miami went on to win the game 5-3 on penalties, with Messi converting the game’s opening penalty kick.
Taking to Instagram, Messi insisted that his team fought until the last moment, thanking the people of Dallas for the love they gave to Inter Miami.
The Argentine wrote: “We fought until the last moment and at the end we got another win!! One more step. Thanks to all the people in Dallas for the love.”
