The Supreme Court has formally served the order of its ruling on the old naira notes on Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister for Justice.

metrowatchxtra.com recalls that the apex court had, in its ruling on the Naira redesign policy by the CBN, on March 3, ruled that the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes remain legal tender until December 31, 2023.

A document containing the order, seen by journalists, mandates the AGF to issue a directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to re-issue the old naira notes and make it available to Nigerians.

Having been mute on the issue, the CBN appears to have been waiting for a copy of the supreme court order or legal advice from the county’s Attorney-General before taking action on the old naira notes.

A part of the document served on Malami states that the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes shall continue to be legal tender alongside the new notes until December 31, 2023, and that banks should continue to receive the old notes until December 31, 2023.

According to reports, the documents were served on the Justice Minister on Friday, February 10, 2023, and leave no excuse to the President, Muhammadu Buhari; the Attorney-General, Abubakar Malami and the Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele.
