After months of speculations, a former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau has formally dumped the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).

metrowatchxtra reports that Shekarau, the Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial district, has now joined the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

His defection was announced by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday, after the Red Chamber resumed from a two hour closed door meeting.

The defection is coming barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari met aggrieved APC Senators at the Presidential Villa, on Tuesday, in a bid to pacify and persuade them from leaving the party.

Meanwhile, in his resignation letter read on the floor of the Senate, Shekarau cited injustice and unfairness by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State as reasons he was leaving the APC.

“I am defecting from the APC to my new party, the New Nigeria Peoples Party as a result of unfairness, injustice by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje,” Shekarau told his colleagues in the letter.

“For the past two years there have been unresolved crisis in Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, hence, I have resigned my membership.”

Senate President Ahmad Lawan subsequently directed the Chief Whip, Senator Orji Kalu to lead Shakarau to the opposition row in the red chamber.
