The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has finally bowed to pressure, agreeing to extend the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) exercise by sixty (60) days.
Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), had stopped the Commission from ending the CVR exercise by June 30, 2022 until all eligible voters had been registered.
This was in response to a resolution by the House of Representatives last Wednesday, urging INEC to extend the deadline for the exercise by an extra 60 days, to enable more Nigerians to register.
Meanwhile, INEC on Tuesday assured Nigerians that the electoral body will comply with the valid court order to extend the CVR exercise beyond June 30.
On Wednesday, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aishatu Jibril Dukku, while briefing lawmakers told members during a plenary session that INEC had agreed to extend the CVR by 60 days.
“The Committee held a meeting with INEC yesterday (Tuesday) and they agreed to extend the CVR, all our resolutions were approved,” she said.
The House of Representatives also called on the Commission to deploy additional staff and voter registration machines across the country to meet the objective.
