Mediators Push 10-day Ceasefire to Revive US-Iran Memorandum

The proposed truce is intended to create diplomatic space for both sides to revive the memorandum of understanding (MOU), which was signed in June

International mediators have presented Iran with a proposal for a 10-day ceasefire aimed at reducing tensions with the United States and reopening negotiations on an interim agreement reached last month, according to a senior Iranian official.

The proposed truce is intended to create diplomatic space for both sides to revive the memorandum of understanding (MOU), which was signed in June.

The agreement established a 60-day ceasefire following the outbreak of hostilities triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets in late February.

The MOU also outlined plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route, while setting a framework for negotiations toward a permanent settlement of the conflict.

The broader objective was to reach a comprehensive agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear programme and bringing an end to the fighting.

However, the agreement has faced strong opposition from Israel, which was not involved in the negotiations.

Israeli officials have argued that the memorandum fails to address what they consider the conflict’s core security concerns, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions, its ballistic missile programme, and broader regional security issues.

While Tehran has yet to publicly respond to the latest ceasefire proposal, diplomatic efforts are continuing as mediators seek to prevent further escalation and bring both sides back to the negotiating table.
