Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced his withdrawal from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the exercise scheduled for Thursday, saying his decision was taken in the interest of peace and unity in the state.

In a statement titled “My decision to withdraw from the Rivers State gubernatorial primaries,” personally signed on Wednesday night, Fubara said he decided after consultations with family, friends and associates.

“After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries,” he said, adding that he would support whoever emerges as the party’s candidate.

The governor described leadership as “about sacrifice,” stressing that personal ambition must give way to the broader interest of the state.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.

Fubara also acknowledged the support of his followers, admitting that many may feel disappointed by the development.

He hinted at facing “immense pressures and difficult choices,” but said his silence during the period was deliberate and guided by the need to protect the interests of the state.

The governor thanked the APC leadership for its support and expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his encouragement during the process.

He maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or fear.

“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside… not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he said.
