2026 World Cup: FIFA Set to Replace Iran at Tournament

FIFA is set to consider possible replacements for Iran at the 2026 World Cup after the country reportedly withdrew from the tournament following U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on its territory, according to the UK Mirror.

The 2026 World Cup will be played mostly in the United States, however their President Donald Trump’s political decisions has affected the football world.

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed during missile attacks and some parts of the capital, Tehran, were damaged.

With Iran set to pull out, FIFA now needs to find another country to complete the group that includes Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.

Iran finished top of their Asian qualification group, but one of FIFA’s possible choice is to fast-track the UAE into the tournament, as they came second.

However, the UAE lost to Iraq in the game to determine who would go to the intercontinental play-off.

Iraq will now play the winner of the match between Bolivia and Suriname for a World Cup spot.

This has made things more complicated. Some people are talking about FIFA giving Iraq a direct spot as Iran’s replacement, which would mean the UAE has to take part in the play-off instead.
