Rivers Crisis: Governor Fubara is Yet to Be Served Impeachment Notice, Aide Reveals

Orji said the governor only became aware of the alleged impeachment move through reports in the print and electronic media, stressing that no official communication had been delivered to him

The Rivers State Government has denied reports that Governor Siminalayi Fubara has been formally served with an impeachment notice.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Friday, Darlington Orji, Special Adviser to the governor, said Fubara had not received any impeachment notice from the Rivers State House of Assembly as of the time of his remarks.

Orji said the governor only became aware of the alleged impeachment move through reports in the print and electronic media, stressing that no official communication had been delivered to him.

He explained that the House of Assembly had earlier announced it would proceed on recess and reconvene around January 28, 2026, adding that the lawmakers later held an emergency sitting outside the agreed schedule.

According to Orji, Governor Fubara was not in the state at the time of the sitting, dismissing suggestions that he deliberately avoided the Assembly or fled to escape impeachment proceedings.

He insisted that the governor has nothing to hide and is not afraid of any lawful process, maintaining that claims of an impeachment notice being served are inaccurate.

He said: “Thank you for giving me the privilege to lend my voice on some of the recent developments in Rivers state.

“Yes, we heard on the print media and national television that impeachment proceeding has been forwarded to His Excellency, Governor Fubara. I can confirm to you, up until this minute, he has not received any proceedings from the state House of Assembly.

“The governor is not a spirit to preempt the State House Assembly that they were going to sit, because if they recall, the assembly announced in their last sitting that they were going for recess to reconvene on 28 January or there about. And the governor, after the first period, decided to step out, maybe to have a rest or to attend to some other issues. The Governor was not in town as at the time they really convened.

“Remember, they had an emergency proceeding, not on the date they had agreed. That’s one. So the governor didn’t run away. The governor is not afraid of service because there is no cockroach in his cupboard. He has nothing to hide”.
