President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Chief Bisi Akande, former Governor of Osun State and founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he marks his 87th birthday.
In a statement he personally signed on Thursday, the President described Chief Akande as an elder statesman whose contributions have been instrumental to Nigeria’s democratic development and the growth of progressive politics in the country.
President Tinubu said Akande, inspired by the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, began his professional career as an accountant with British Petroleum before venturing into public service, a path he would pursue for decades.
He recalled that the celebrant served as Secretary to the State Government in the old Oyo State in 1979, later becoming Deputy Governor during the Second Republic, and eventually Governor of Osun State between 1999 and 2003.
According to the President, Akande’s leadership as Interim Chairman of the APC laid the foundation for the party’s historic victory in 2015, when it became the first political party to defeat a sitting government at the federal level.
Tinubu commended Akande’s leadership, integrity, industry and commitment to democratic values, noting that his role in strengthening the progressive movement in Nigeria remains significant.
The President also expressed personal gratitude to the former APC chairman, describing him as a mentor and ally whose advice, encouragement and support were crucial to his political career and eventual emergence as President.
He further acknowledged Akande’s continued support for the current administration and the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Despite his age, Tinubu said Akande remains active and unwavering in his advocacy for democracy, social justice and good governance.
The President prayed for good health and renewed strength for Chief Akande as he celebrates his 87th birthday.
Chief Bisi Akande is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in Nigeria’s progressive political tradition and a key architect of the APC.
