Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen cooperation on defence and military development, with a focus on training, intelligence sharing, joint exercises and capacity building.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, and the Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari.

The MoU establishes a framework for collaboration on strategic areas including technical assistance, operational support, logistics, counter-terrorism efforts and knowledge exchange between both countries’ armed forces.

Describing the deal as a “significant milestone”, Dr. Matawalle noted that the agreement had been in development for some time and its conclusion will “strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and enhance the capacity of our armed forces.”

The Ministry of Defence said the cooperation framework is expected to boost military professionalism through expanded training opportunities, specialist courses and joint exercises that improve interoperability.

The pact, which takes effect immediately, will run for an initial period of five years, with the option of renewal for another five years. It also allows either party to terminate the agreement with a three-month written notice through diplomatic channels.

According to the ministry, the MoU will support Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, insurgency and organised crime through enhanced intelligence sharing and coordinated counter-terrorism strategies.

The ministry in a statement by Enderline Chukwu, Assistant Director, (Information and PR) expressed confidence that the agreement will contribute to long-term security, stability and defence modernisation in the country.
