The United States has agreed to a $346 million sale of ammunition, precision bombs, and rockets to Nigeria.

The aim is to strengthen Nigeria’s military operations against terrorism and illicit trafficking.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the approval on Wednesday, listing the package to include 1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs; 1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups for 500 lb Paveway II GBU-12; 515 MXU-1006 Air Foil Groups for 250 lb Paveway II GBU-58; 1,517 computer control groups for Paveway II bombs; 1,002 FMU-152 joint programmable fuzes; and 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II all-up rounds.

It also includes non-major defence equipment such as bomb components, impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, integration support, test equipment, and logistics services.

Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems were named as contractors for the sale.

According to the DSCA, the deal will boost Nigeria’s ability to counter terrorist organisations and curb illicit trafficking in the country and the Gulf of Guinea, without altering the region’s basic military balance.

The agency said the final cost would depend on requirements, budget authority, and signed agreements.

In 2022, the US approved an estimated $997 million sale of military equipment to Nigeria, including 12 attack helicopters and night vision systems.
